General Meeting

Minutes – June 14, 2011

 

Call to Order

A general meeting of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 4C was held on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.  Chairman, Commissioner, Joseph Vaughan called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm in the Roosevelt Senior High School Library at 4301 13th Street, N.W.

 

Roll Call of Commissioners

Commissioners present included:  Joseph Vaughan (4C05), Janet Myers (4C02), Michael Yates (4C01), Joseph Martin (4C09), David Tumblin (4C06), Shanel Anthony (4C07), Timothy Jones (4C08), Robert H. Mandle (4C10).  Commissioners Jean Badalamenti (4C03), Steve Leraris (4C04), and Robert H. Mandle were absent.  A quorum was established.

1.   Relocation of ANC 4C’s Monthly Meetings to Petworth Library

Loughton Sergeant, Executive Director, DC Caribbean Carnival.  Topic: Status of parade route, staging area and related updates. (Commissioner Anthony)

Rev. Rosemari Sullivan, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church/Rock Creek Cemetery. Topic: New security measures.  (Commissioner Martin)

 A motion by Commissioner Martin to adopt the amended agenda was seconded and  approved unanimously by the Commission.

 

Reading and approval of May Minutes

A motion by Commissioner Martin to adopt the minutes was seconded by Commissioner Myers and passed unanimously by the Commission.

 

Treasurer’s Reports

Starting budget: $52,000.00

Expenditures totaling as of 6/14/2011: $40,000.00

Remaining balance: $12, 000.00

Major expenses are the grants and ANC-4C Newsletter

 

Grants:

Quarterly report is missing receipts from Petworth Market ( Commissioner Mandle), Petworth Jazz ( Commissioner Anthony) and Friends of 16th Street Parks

(Commissioner Vaughan), 19th Street Baptist Church (Commissioner Myers), Kids and Culture, LLC (Commissioner Jones) and El Haynes (Commissioner Anthony) grants.

 

Correspondence & Announcements

·         Fourth District to undergo realignment. (Commissioner Martin)

·         Clean up on Spring Road and Quincy was a great success with the help of the Mayor’s office and Cosa.

·         The Varum Market located at 9th and Varum will close at 9 pm nightly.

·         Councilmember Muriel Bowser, Commissioner Anthony and MPD performed a random walk through to show community support for the Island Café and Domku.

·         The Council voted on a final budget that will restore lights to Sherman Circle, provide renovations to Kennedy Street alleys and the Lamond Riggs Library.

       The Green Clean Team was awarded 1.8 million dollars.

·         Councilmember Bowser reported an increase in garage parking tax starting in Oct. 1, 2011.  Sharp Health was awarded six million dollars for renovations.

·         Councilmember David Catania will enact the South Capitol Street Tragedy Memorial Act of 2011.

     

MPD Department

Office Phillip Burggruf answered questions of concerns from the community.

Fire Department/EMS

No representative from the Fire Department/EMS attended the meeting.

 

Community Comments

 

·         Rev. Rosemari Sullivan, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will no longer allow dog walking in the cemetery.

·         Strawberry Festival June 25, 2011.

·         Petworth Library will have a free mask workshop on June 18, 2011 from 10-12:30 pm.

·         S.A.T. Tutoring at Upshur Recreation Center on Wednesday evenings

·         Mary Center located at 3912 Georgia Ave., provides WIC, Social Services, Medical and dental on a sliding fee schedule and will accept many insurances.

·         Community Project of 1340 Hamilton Street will host a pool party and Grand Opening on June 4 from 12pm-4pm.

·         Neighborhood Planner, Coordinator of Ward 4, Malaika K. Abernathy to discuss the 14th St., Corridor/Commercial nodes  on May 21 at Powell Elementary School from 10am, open house format.

·         Community Fair at MarFarland on May 21, 2011.

·         Commissioners will vote on the move for ANC’s meetings to the Petworth Library in July 2011.

·         Latin American Youth Center, David Malec, Topic: Conflict Resolution Project, Thursday, June 16, 2011, 6:30pn-7:30pm and June 21 at 6:30pm, St Stevens Church.

 

New Business

 

Presentation by Commissioner Martin, Letter of Support for Upshur Street bicycle lanes between 8th Street and Rock Creek Church Road.

Motion by Commissioner Martin to send the Letter of Support, was seconded and passed unanimously by the Commission.

Motion by Commissioner Jones to support the grant request, was seconded by Commissioner Anthony and passed by the Commission with Commissioner Tumblin opposition.

 

Presentation by 19th Street Baptist Church, Minister Christopher Crawford for their annual Block Party/Health Fair, July 9, from 10am-4pm grant request.

Motion by Myers to support the grant request, was seconded by Commissioner Martin and passed unanimously.

 

Motion by Commissioner Martin to adjourn the meeting, the motion was seconded, the motion was passed and the meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm.
